South Africa's mobile networks
South Africa has four main mobile networks and one data-first operator: Vodacom, MTN, Cell C, Telkom and rain. The store's eSIM does not pick one by name: the plans are Africa regional plans, so the eSIM roams on a South African partner network and your phone shows that network's name once connected.
- 4G reaches 99.5% of people
- 5G since 2020
- eSIM roams on a partner network

The short answer
A South African partner network, picked for you. These are Africa regional plans, so in South Africa the eSIM connects on its own. All you do is turn data roaming on for the eSIM line.

What your phone will show
A network name you can look up on this site. Which partner the store uses can change, and the plans are sold describing exactly that: roaming on a South African network. If the name on your phone matters to you, this page is the place to see who operates what.
The networks, one by one
- Vodacom: the largest, first to 5G in 2020.
- MTN: 5G weeks later in 2020, strong city coverage.
- Cell C: a brand riding on MTN’s and Vodacom’s networks since 2023.
- Telkom: the fourth of the main mobile networks.
- rain: started data-only, sells voice plans too now.
How to check the network on your phone
- Connect the eSIM as in Switch it on after landing.
- The status bar shows the partner network’s name next to 4G or 5G.
- To see details: iPhone, Settings, Mobile Service, the line, Network Selection. Android, Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, the line, Carriers.
When the plan’s days start
The store does not publish a start rule for these plans, so this site does not state one. Two facts it does publish: install the eSIM within 30 days of buying it, and write to the store before installing if your trip starts later, to confirm when the validity days begin.
Coverage in one line
The regulator reported 4G population coverage of 99.5% and 5G of 58% in 2025. Population coverage counts people, not land: for long drives and the big parks, download offline maps before you leave the city.
