O.R. Tambo airport (JNB), Johannesburg

O.R. Tambo International (JNB) is one of Africa's busiest airports, and the first place most travellers meet South Africa's RICA rule: a SIM card bought here must be registered with your passport before it works.

The short answer

At O.R. Tambo you will find phone shops, including an MTN store listed as open from 6am to 10pm. An eSIM installed before the flight skips all of it: switch it on after landing, turn data roaming on for its line, and you are online before baggage.

Practical notes

  1. Money:cards work almost everywhere; keep a little cash for tips and small vendors. ATMs are plentiful at the airport.
  2. Signal:4G covers 99.5% of the population; the terminal is no problem for any network.
  3. Water:tap water in Johannesburg is treated and generally drunk; bottled water is everywhere if you prefer.
  4. The belt first:if your eSIM is installed, walk past the SIM counters and collect your bags. That is the whole advantage.

Getting online at JNB

Phone shops: several, including an MTN store listed as open 6am to 10pm. Prices are counter prices, and the RICA registration is done there with your passport.

An eSIM instead: installed before the flight, switched on after landing. No counter, no passport copy, no queue. The install guide and the activation guide cover both steps, and the plans are on the plans page.

Getting into the city

The Gautrain runs from the airport to Sandton and Marlboro, with onward trains from Sandton to Rosebank, Park Station and Pretoria; it is the calm option if your hotel is on its line. Metered taxis and ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt) pick up from the designated areas; agree the fare or use the app before you walk out. The Johannesburg page has the longer version.

Questions

Where are the SIM card shops at O.R. Tambo?

At the airport, where several phone shops sell prepaid SIMs. MTN's own store listing for O.R. Tambo says it opens from 6am to 10pm. Every prepaid SIM needs your passport and a RICA registration on the spot.

Can I buy an eSIM at the airport?

You buy it before you fly, from the store's page, and install it on Wi-Fi at home. By the time you land at JNB it is already on the phone; nothing is bought or collected at the airport.

How long does a RICA registration take?

The registration itself is quick at a staffed counter: your passport is copied, your details are entered and the line activates. The queue is the variable on a busy morning; an eSIM skips it entirely.

Will my phone work immediately after landing?

Switch the eSIM line on, set it for mobile data and turn data roaming on for that line. It connects to a South African partner network within a minute or two, usually while you are still walking to the baggage belt.
