The Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is South Africa's flagship safari: nearly two million hectares of bush along the Mozambique border, with the big five and a rest camp every hour or two of driving. Your phone plays two roles there: camera and map. Plan the data for both.

  • 4G in camps and gates
  • Offline maps for the bush
  • SANParks at both ends

The short answer

Kruger's rest camps and gates hold 4G, and the bush between them does not: that is true for every network in South Africa. Download offline maps and your booking details before the gate, and let the eSIM reconnect in camp.

Practical notes

  1. Getting there:fly to Skukuza or Nelspruit (MQP) and rent a car, or drive from Johannesburg in four to five hours.
  2. Getting around:your own car, a guided game drive, or a walking trail with a ranger.
  3. Paying:cards at the main camps; small cash for curios and tips.
  4. When to go:May to September for dry-season game viewing; November to March for green season and newborn animals.

Data in the bush

Rest camps, gates and the main tar roads hold 4G on the country’s networks. The quieter loops, the bush camps and the long gravel drives go dark, and that is the same on every network in the country. The routine: download offline maps for the park area before the gate, save your booking confirmations and gate times, and let the eSIM reconnect on its own in camp. Data roaming stays on for its line throughout.

The shape of a visit

  • South: Skukuza and Lower Sabie for the densest game and the Sabie river.
  • Central: Satara for the open plains and cat country.
  • North: Punda Maria and Pafuri for the quietest corners and the finest birding.

Questions

Is there signal in the Kruger?

In the rest camps, gates and main roads, yes: 4G is normal. Deep in the bush between them, expect nothing on any network. Prepare for offline and the trip is easy.

Where do people stay?

SANParks rest camps inside the park (Skukuza, Lower Sabie, Satara and the rest), or private lodges in the surrounding reserves on the western edge.

How do I book?

SANParks bookings run through its own site and call centre for rest camps; private reserves book directly. Book months ahead for high season (June to September).

Do I need malaria tablets?

Kruger is a low-risk malaria area: many travellers take precautions in the wet summer months and skip them in the dry winter. Ask a travel clinic; the decision is a medical one, not a website's.
