The Garden Route
The Garden Route is South Africa's classic road trip: about 300 km of coast, forest and lagoon between Mossel Bay and the Tsitsikamma section of the national park, with the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains as the backdrop. It rewards slow driving and offline maps.
- ~300 km, Mossel Bay to Tsitsikamma
- National park at both ends
- 4G in towns, gaps in the forests

The short answer
The Garden Route runs about 300 km along the Western and Eastern Cape coast, from Mossel Bay to the Tsitsikamma section of the national park. 4G holds through the towns; download offline maps for the passes and forest stretches.

Practical notes
- Getting there:fly to George or Cape Town and drive; the route starts within an hour of both.
- Getting around:your own car or a small-group tour; distances are short, stops are many.
- Paying:cards work in towns and at park gates; keep cash for farm stalls.
- When to go:October to April for beaches; May and September for quiet roads and lower prices.
The shape of the trip
- Mossel Bay to Wilderness: the warm-up: beaches, the Map of Africa viewpoint, the first lagoon views.
- Knysna and Plettenberg Bay: the heart of the route: oysters, heads, beaches, boat trips.
- Tsitsikamma: forest, the Storms River mouth, the suspension bridge walk, and the national park camps.
Data on the drive
Towns hold strong 4G on every network; the forest legs and some passes go quiet. The practical setup is done before you leave the city: offline maps downloaded, playlists saved, and data roaming on for the eSIM line so it reconnects by itself when a tower appears. The data roaming page covers the settings, and the Kruger page repeats the drill for the bush.

How long does the Garden Route take?
Driven without stopping, a day. Done properly, four to five days: two nights in Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, a night around Wilderness or Mossel Bay, and time in Tsitsikamma.
Do I need a car?
Yes, or a booked tour. The route is a road, and the stops worth making sit off it. The drive is easy: good tarmac, short distances, plenty of places to stop.
Will I have signal the whole way?
In the towns, yes: 4G is standard. The forest stretches and some passes drop out, so download offline maps before each leg. Your eSIM reconnects by itself when the signal returns.
When is the best time to visit?
October to April for beach weather; the shoulder months for quieter roads. Winter here is green and moody, and still very driveable.
