Cape Town International (CPT)

Cape Town International (CPT) sits between the city and the winelands, with Table Mountain visible from the forecourt. It is a friendlier landing than most: small enough to cross in minutes, big enough for every service a traveller needs.

The short answer

Cape Town International has an MTN store in its international arrivals hall. A SIM from it needs your passport and a RICA registration; an eSIM installed before the flight is on the phone already, so you switch it on and leave.

Practical notes

  1. Weather:the south-easter wind ("the Cape Doctor") is a summer regular; mornings are usually calmest for Table Mountain.
  2. Money:cards everywhere; keep small notes for tips and parking attendants.
  3. Signal:the city bowl, the Atlantic seaboard and the winelands all hold strong 4G.
  4. The mountain:buy cableway tickets online for a timed slot on busy days; the queue is the only hard part.

Getting online at CPT

Phone shops: MTN lists a store in the international arrivals hall. A prepaid SIM bought there is registered under RICA with your passport before it works.

An eSIM instead: on the phone before you fly. Switch on the line after landing, data roaming on for that line, and the phone finds a partner network while you walk to the carousel. Plans and prices are on the plans page.

Getting into the city

Ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt) picks up from the designated area outside arrivals. Metered taxis queue nearby. The MyCiTi bus is the cheap option to the civic centre, and car rental desks line the ground floor if the Garden Route is next. The Cape Town page and the Garden Route page take it from there.

Questions

Where can I buy a SIM at Cape Town airport?

MTN lists a store in the international arrivals hall. Take your passport: the sale includes a RICA registration that activates the line.

Is the airport far from the city?

About 20 minutes to the city centre on the N2 when traffic behaves. Ride-hailing and metered taxis both work from the arrivals level, and the MyCiTi bus runs to the civic centre.

Does the eSIM work immediately at CPT?

Yes: switch the eSIM line on after landing, choose it for mobile data and turn data roaming on for that line. It connects to a South African partner network within a minute or two.
