Cape Town
Cape Town is the postcard: the mountain, the two oceans, the pastel Bo-Kaap streets and the winelands an hour inland. It is also an easy city to do well with a phone and a jacket, and a hard one to do well in a hurry.
- Table Mountain
- Winelands within an hour
- 4G along the whole peninsula

The short answer
Cape Town is a city built around a mountain, and your phone is the map: ride-hailing, cableway tickets and restaurant bookings all live online. An eSIM switched on at CPT has you online in minutes, with data roaming on its line.

Practical notes
- Getting there:CPT, with the mountain visible before you land.
- Getting around:ride-hailing in the city, a car for the peninsula and winelands.
- Paying:cards everywhere; tip in small notes.
- When to go:February to April for calm warm days; book the cableway ahead in peak season.
Getting there and around
Arrive at Cape Town International (CPT) and ride-hailing takes you anywhere central in twenty minutes. Inside the city, Uber and Bolt are the practical default; the MyCiTi buses cover the Atlantic seaboard and the city centre cheaply. The car comes out for the peninsula and the winelands.
What to see
- Table Mountain: the cableway on a clear morning; walkers take Platteklip Gorge.
- The peninsula drive: Clifton, Camps Bay, Chapman’s Peak, the penguins at Boulders, Cape Point.
- The winelands: Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, each an hour by road.
- Bo-Kaap and the V&A: an hour each on foot, between coffee stops.

How many days does Cape Town need?
Four days covers the mountain, the peninsula and a winelands day. Six lets you add the Garden Route's first stops without racing.
What is the weather like?
Mediterranean: warm dry summers (November to March) with the south-easter wind, cool wet winters (June to August). The shoulder months are often the sweet spot.
Should I rent a car?
Only for the winelands and the peninsula beyond Simon's Town; in the city, ride-hailing is cheaper and easier. The [Garden Route](/en/places/garden-route) is a different answer: that one wants a car.
Is the water safe to drink?
Yes in the city. The taps are treated and monitored; bottled water is a choice, not a need.
