The Garden Route road trip

The Garden Route is the road trip South Africa recommends first: roughly 300 km of coast, lagoon and indigenous forest between Mossel Bay and the Tsitsikamma, with the Outeniqua mountains running behind like a wall.

The short answer

Drive the Garden Route from Mossel Bay to Tsitsikamma over four to five days: two nights around Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, one in Wilderness or Mossel Bay, and one in Tsitsikamma. Download offline maps before each leg; towns hold 4G, the forests do not.

The route, stop by stop

  • Mossel Bay: the first stop, the Diaz Museum and the Map of Africa viewpoint. A good landing night.
  • Wilderness and Sedgefield: lagoon country. Slow mornings, canoe water, the first taste of the forest.
  • Knysna: the heads, oysters, and the route’s food cluster. Two nights, minimum.
  • Plettenberg Bay: beaches and boat trips; the Robberg peninsula walk if your legs want a real one.
  • Tsitsikamma: the national park’s coastal forest, the Storms River mouth and its suspension bridge. Sleep inside if you can.

Driving it well

Distances are short, so the enemy is rushing. Drive the passes (Outeniqua, Kaaimans, Bloukrans) in daylight, stop at the farm stalls, and treat the towns as destinations rather than fuel stops. Offline maps before each leg; the forest stretches have no signal on any network, and the eSIM reconnects by itself when the next tower appears.

What to eat

Knysna oysters, Plettenberg Bay seafood, farm-stall cheese and biltong for the road. The tipping and payments guide covers the money side.

Where to next

Questions

Which direction should I drive?

Cape Town to Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha) is the common direction; driven the other way, the Indian Ocean sits on your left. Either way, drive the passes in daylight.

What should I book ahead?

Accommodation in Knysna and Plettenberg Bay in season, the Tsitsikamma national park if you are staying inside it, and any boat or whale trip you actually want. The rest can be same-day.

Where does the signal drop?

Forest stretches around the Tsitsikamma and some passes. The routine: download offline maps before each leg, keep data roaming on for the eSIM line, and it reconnects on its own in the next town.

Do I need a 4x4?

No. The Garden Route is tarmac the whole way; a normal car handles it. Save the 4x4 for the Richtersveld one day.
