When to visit South Africa

South Africa sits in the southern hemisphere, so its seasons run opposite to Europe and North America: December is high summer, July is midwinter. The country is also big enough to hold several climates at once: Cape Town's Mediterranean coast, Johannesburg's highveld storms, and the Kruger's dry bushveld all answer to different calendars.

The short answer

The strongest all-round months for a South Africa trip are March to May and September to November: warm days, fewer crowds, lower prices. June and July suit safaris and Cape winters indoors; December and January are peak coastal summer.

Questions

What is the best month to visit South Africa?

April and October for the all-round trip: mild weather in both Cape Town and Johannesburg, and the parks still green without peak-season pricing.

When is safari season?

May to September, the dry winter: vegetation thins, animals gather at water, and the Kruger is at its easiest to read. It is cold at night; pack layers.

When can I see whales?

June to November along the Western Cape coast, with Hermanus at its loudest from August to October. The drive there is a day trip from Cape Town.

When should I avoid the crowds?

The Christmas-to-January coastal peak is the busiest and priciest stretch of the year. If your dates are flexible, aim just before or after it.
