Johannesburg

Johannesburg is not South Africa's pretty city, and it is proudly its most alive one: markets, galleries, braais and a skyline that anchors the country's money. It also runs on data. Ride-hailing, live maps and restaurant queues are all app-shaped, which is why getting online at O.R. Tambo matters more here than almost anywhere.

  • Uber and Bolt
  • 4G everywhere you will go

The short answer

Johannesburg runs on data: Uber, Bolt, maps and restaurant menus live on your phone. An eSIM bought before the flight and switched on at O.R. Tambo means maps and messages work from the terminal, with your own number still on WhatsApp.

Practical notes

  1. Getting there:JNB is the gateway; the Gautrain or a ride-hailing car to your hotel.
  2. Getting around:Gautrain plus Uber covers a normal trip; rent a car for day trips.
  3. Paying:cards everywhere, tips in small notes.
  4. When to go:September to November and March to May for warm, dry days; June and July nights get properly cold.

Getting there and around

The Gautrain links the airport to Sandton; onward trains reach Rosebank, Park Station and Pretoria. It is quick, safe and the easiest first ride in the country. Uber and Bolt cover everything the train does not, and they are the default way locals move after dark. O.R. Tambo airport page has the arrival detail.

What to see

  • Maboneng and the east side: markets, coffee, street art, and the city’s weekend energy.
  • The Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill: the two visits that make the city make sense.
  • Rosebank and Sandton: the polished Johannesburg: malls, galleries, restaurants.
  • The Cradle of Humankind: an hour out of town, worth the drive or a tour.

Questions

Is Johannesburg safe for visitors?

Treat it like any big city with a sharp edge: use ride-hailing after dark, keep the phone in a pocket near the kerb, and follow local advice about which streets to walk. The tourist neighbourhoods (Sandton, Rosebank, Maboneng, the Market Theatre area) are busy and manageable in daylight.

Do I need a car in Johannesburg?

Not for a city visit: Uber and Bolt are cheap and everywhere, and the Gautrain covers the airport, Sandton and Marlboro, with onward trains to Rosebank, Park Station and Pretoria. A car earns its place for day trips like the Cradle of Humankind.

Where do people stay?

Sandton for business and malls, Rosebank for a calmer version of the same, Maboneng or Braamfontein for food and street life, and the airport strip for one-night layovers.

How do I pay for things?

Cards almost everywhere; ride-hailing is in-app. Keep a little cash for tips and informal parking attendants.
