Telkom

The short answer
Telkom is the fourth of South Africa's main mobile networks, competing with Vodacom, MTN and Cell C. 4G reaches 99.5% of the population nationally; the network name on your phone will say which partner the eSIM found.

Telkom is the fourth of South Africa’s main mobile networks, grown out of the country’s fixed-line operator. It rounds out the market alongside Vodacom, MTN and Cell C.
What matters for a trip
- Coverage: national 4G reaches 99.5% of the population; population coverage counts people, not land, so the open road and the big parks still reward offline maps.
- The network name: if your phone shows Telkom, the eSIM found it as a partner network, and data roaming on the eSIM line is what allowed that.
- RICA: Telkom SIMs sold in shops need the same passport registration as every local SIM. The eSIM does not.
If you want a local number
A Telkom SIM gives you a South African number and a monthly data bundle, at the cost of a shop visit and registration. For stays of a few weeks, most travellers find the eSIM plus their own number on WhatsApp simpler; for months, a registered local line earns its place.
