Vodacom

The short answer
Vodacom is South Africa's largest mobile network and launched 5G on 4 May 2020 in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town. If your eSIM connects on Vodacom, you are on the country's most established network; no action is needed beyond having data roaming on for the eSIM line.
Checked on September 30, 2026
Vodacom is South Africa’s largest mobile network. It launched the country’s first 5G service on 4 May 2020 in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, and its coverage is the yardstick other networks are described against.
If your phone shows Vodacom
The eSIM is doing its job: it connected on a South African partner network. Check that data roaming is on for the eSIM line and that the eSIM is the line set for mobile data. Vodacom is where most travellers first see bars appear.
Buying a Vodacom SIM instead
A Vodacom SIM bought in a shop needs RICA registration with your passport, and it gives you a South African number. A registered local line is the right tool if you are staying months and need a local number for calls. For a trip, the eSIM skips the counter and keeps your own number on WhatsApp.
The facts on record
- 5G since: 4 May 2020, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town first.
- RICA: a Vodacom SIM needs it; a foreign eSIM roaming on Vodacom does not.
- Coverage: counted in people, not land: 4G reaches 99.5% of the population nationally (ICASA, 2025), and the open road still has gaps.
