Johannesburg first day

Johannesburg is where South Africa's money and momentum live, and the first day works around one clean line: airport to train to hotel, then one neighbourhood on foot before dark.

The short answer

Land at JNB, ride the Gautrain to Sandton or Rosebank, check in and walk to dinner. Your phone does the rest: Uber and Bolt for anything the train does not cover, maps for the streets, and your own number on WhatsApp throughout.

The first day, hour by hour

  1. Land and connect. eSIM on, data roaming on its line, maps loaded before the train. Nothing to buy at the airport: the phone is already online.
  2. Ride the Gautrain. From the airport station to Sandton (about 15 minutes); change there for Rosebank, Park Station or Pretoria. Buy a card at the machine, tap in, breathe out.
  3. Check in, then walk. Sandton and Rosebank are mall-and-restaurant country; Maboneng and Braamfontein are coffee and street life.
  4. Dinner in-app or on foot. Uber and Bolt run everywhere; the apps work on your eSIM data while your own number stays on WhatsApp.

The phone setup that makes it easy

  • Ride-hailing apps installed and cards added before you fly.
  • Offline maps downloaded for the city and the airport route.
  • Data roaming on for the eSIM line only; keep it off on your home line.

The activation guide covers the settings, and the network pages explain the name your phone will show.

Where to next

Questions

Is the Gautrain worth it from the airport?

Yes: it is quick, safe and predictable, from the airport to Sandton, with onward trains to Rosebank, Park Station and Pretoria. Buy the card at the airport station, tap in, and watch the city come at you.

What are the safety rules locals actually use?

Ride-hailing after dark instead of walking, phone out of sight near the kerb, no jewellery on display, and one neighbourhood at a time: the city rewards local advice over bravery.

Where should a first-timer eat?

Braamfontein and Maboneng for street food and coffee, Rosebank for everything, and a shisa nyama (braai spot) for the meal the city is actually about.

Do I need cash?

Not really: cards work almost everywhere. Keep small notes for tips and parking attendants.
